Stakeholder interviews that improve usage reporting

Short, well-framed interviews reveal which usage questions are ceremonial and which ones actually change plans.

Before redrawing a product usage dashboard, speak with the people who claim to use it. Support leads, commercial managers, and engineering managers often need different grain than the product owner who commissioned the view.

Ask for a recent decision. What information was missing? What did they ignore on the current report? Which number do they trust enough to act on without a follow-up spreadsheet?

Record the vocabulary they use. If leaders talk about ‘activated households’ while the dashboard shows ‘sessions’, the strategy gap is linguistic as much as technical.

Limit interviews to thirty or forty minutes. Longer sessions drift into wish lists. The goal is to map decisions to signals, not to collect every conceivable metric request.

Synthesise across roles before proposing indicators. Overlap between stakeholders is where durable dashboard strategy usually lives.
